NSF Awards Tsiropoulou to design 6G-enabled Positioning, Navigation, and Timing Solutions
March 30, 2023
UNM ECE Asst Prof Eirini Eleni Tsiropoulou, New Mexico Tech and The City of Albuquerque are collaborating to design a 3D network architecture that integrates communications for disaster relief operations.
Prof. Eirini Eleni Tsiropoulou, in collaboration with the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and the Office of Emergency Management in the City of Albuquerque will design a 3D networks architecture that exploits the advances in the field of next generation wireless networks to provide a prototype solution such that an integrated communications system for disaster relief operations is realized.
With the goal of creating a prototype of an integrated communications system used for disaster relief operations, their collaboration will introduce an innovative massive multiple access mechanism and a dynamic spectrum sharing model that will increase the public safety system’s capacity and improve the spectrum utilization, respectively, during relief operations.
Also proposed is a new Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) solution that supports scenarios of Global Positioning System (GPS) denial by utilizing the next generation network’s technology of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS).
“The outcomes will have long-lasting benefits for the communications, and the well-being, of the victims and first responders during disaster relief operations,” said Tsiropoulou.
Tsiropoulou will provide unique training for graduate and undergraduate students at the crossroads of reinforcement learning and next generation networking technologies.
