Mobile Edge Computing Wants YOU!

ECE Prof Xiang Sun will be teaching a Mobile Edge Computing class this spring that promises to open fresh business oppportunities for those who work on mobile networks. And there's still time to register!

The class, Mobile Edge Computing, will be taught in room 118 of the ECE building from 10-11:15 am on Monday and Wednesday.

Mobile Edge Computing and Networking, a brand new technology, is the key component for the future of the mobile network. Various IT companies, such as Nokia, Facebook, Qualcomm, Google, and Microsoft, have established research team to work on designing, optimizing, and utilizing the Mobile Edge Computing platform to facilitate various applications.

"By taking this course, the student would grasp the knowledge of the basic architecture of 4G LTE mobile network, key technologies in 5G network, integration cloud-computing facilities into mobile networks, and resource management in the Mobile Edge Computing system," said Dr Sun in a recent e-mail exchange.

Dr. Sun received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in 2018, and his M.E. and B.E. degrees both from Hebei University of Engineering (China) in 2011 and 2008, respectively.

His research interests include mobile edge computing, cloud computing, Internet of Things, wireless networks, big-data-driven networking, and green communications and computing.

"One of my current resource areas is mobile edge computing and networking," said Dr. Sun. I have been conducting research on the topic of the resource management in mobile edge computing and mobile networks since 2015. I have many related publications in prestigious IEEE journals and conferences."

Further questions regarding this class can be sent directly to Dr Sun at his e-mail address: sunxiang@unm.edu

When asked "What Is Mobile Edge Computing," Dr Sun sent the following explanation, and the illustration that "shows the big picture of the mobile edge computing and networking platform.

"Mobile Edge Computing and Networking is a form of system that offers cloud-computing capabilities and an IT service environment at the edge of a mobile network. The system can enable users to gain ultra-low latency, high bandwidth, and real-time access various information provided by different content and service providers. The mobile edge computing and networking platform can facilitate many interactive applications. For example, Nokia has established a mobile edge computing and networking platform to attach a cloudlet (i.e., a small-scale data center) to a base station. Based on the platform, a use case named “connected cars” has been developed, where each local cloudlet analyzes the data at the point of capture and feeds back the insights to the vehicles within the cloudlet’s coverage with extremely low latency (less than 20 milliseconds) in order to improve road safety."
