Shu Wang Wins 1st in ACES Student Comp

ECE Student Mr. Shu Wang received First Place in the student paper competition at the 2018 International Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society (ACES) Symposium held March 25-29 in Denver, Colorado.

Mr. Wang's work was supported by AFOSR/AFRL Center of Excellence on the Science of Electronics in Extreme Electromagnetic Environments.

The title of his paper is “A Space-Time Domain Decomposition Method for High-fidelity Electromagnetic Simulation”.

Mr. Shu Wang joined The Applied and Computational Electromagnetics Group in 2015. His research is focused on novel computational methods for time domain electromagnetics problems.

Mr. Wang's paper addresses a growing need for space-time parallel simulation capability in electromagnetics applications. Currently, time-dependent EM solvers are typically parallel only in space. The sequential-in-time nature of these solvers can achieve good parallel scaling when the number of spatial mesh points per core is large. But the parallel efficiency quickly deteriorates and even saturates if spatial parallelism has been fully exploited.

Mr. Wang proposed a new time domain EM solver to harvest parallelism in both spatial and temporal dimension. This work resulted in a scalable parallel time domain solver which can amend the scalability issue for traditional ones.

This work also won Mr. Wang first place in the student competition ate ACES and his professor was very pleased, "'Shu Wang is a smart and highly motivated student. He embraces challenges, and is not afraid to address difficult scientific problems," said Dr. Peng.
